What a restaurant sign has to do
Most people choose where to eat from the street or the parking lot, often after dark. Good restaurant signs do three jobs at once: they get you noticed from a moving car, they tell people on the sidewalk what you serve, and they make the room feel worth staying in.
For most places that means lit LED restaurant signs out front, hours and menu highlights on the glass, menu boards that read from the line and one thing guests want to photograph. We design it all as one set of custom restaurant signs, so the colors and the logo match on every piece.

A lit sign out front
Channel letters or a lightbox keep your name readable after dark, when dinner traffic is heaviest. Ask for a night view: your mockup can show the sign lit.See channel letter signs -
Hours and menu on the glass
Hours, phone, delivery apps and a few menu highlights in cut or printed vinyl. In the City of LA, window signs can cover up to 10% of the window area.See window graphics -
Menu boards
Restaurant menu signs printed on aluminum, acrylic or PVC, sized to read from the line. A lit menu board is a lightbox with a printed face you can swap when prices change.Ask about menu boards -
A sign for the sidewalk
A blade sign sticks out from the wall, so people walking by see you before they reach your door. Two-sided, lit or unlit.Ask about a blade sign -

Channel letters, lightbox or blade sign?
| Feature | Channel letters | Lightbox (cabinet) | Blade sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Your name on the fascia, read from the street and the parking lot | A full logo, or a lit menu board | People walking by on a busy sidewalk |
| At night | Each letter glows on its own | The whole printed face glows | Lit or unlit, and read from both sides |
| Changing it later | New letters for a new name | Swap the printed face | Swap the faces |
| City of LA notes | A lit-sign permit, issued only to a C-10 or C-45 licensed contractor | The same lit-sign permit. A new face in an existing cabinet usually needs none. | At least 8 ft of clearance above the sidewalk, on a lot with at least 50 ft of street frontage |
City of LA notes are general information from the LADBS Sign Manual, not an approval. Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena have their own rules.

Opening date planning
Opening soon? Plan the timing first
The permanent sign usually takes the longest, because the city reviews it. The City of LA's own timelines:
- A Sign Pre-Inspection normally takes at least two weeks (LADBS).
- A regular plan check takes about 15 to 30 business days just to be assigned to an engineer (LADBS).
- Clearances from other departments can take months on some projects (LADBS).
So start the main sign as soon as the lease is signed. For opening day, window graphics and a temporary banner can carry your name. In the City of LA a temporary banner needs a permit too: it can stay up for 30 days, then comes down for 30, and 90 days a year at most.
Tell us your opening date, and we'll tell you plainly what can realistically be ready by then.
Sign, windows, A-frame insert and temporary banner in one request. No payment details.
LA permit notes
Sign permits for restaurants in Los Angeles
There's no single sign permit for a restaurant in California: each city writes its own sign rules. In the City of Los Angeles, LADBS issues sign permits, and permits for lit signs go only to a C-10 or C-45 licensed contractor. Our licensed sign-contractor partner files the permit, and we prepare the drawings. Your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number.
Restaurant signs in Hollywood can also fall under the Hollywood Signage Supplemental Use District, which overrides the general rules. Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena review signs their own way.
Which city reviews your sign and what it usually asks for. Information only, not an approval.
