How to choose a business sign
Three questions narrow it down fast:
- Where does it go? Over the door (a storefront sign or channel letters), at the street (a monument or pylon sign), inside (a lobby sign) or on glass (window graphics).
- Does it need to light up? If you're open after dark, lit letters or a lightbox read at night. In the City of LA, lit signs need an electrical sign permit filed by a C-10 or C-45 licensed contractor.
- What does your landlord allow? Many centers have sign criteria that set the type, size and color. Ask for them early.
Still not sure? Send a photo and we'll suggest custom signage options that fit your wall and your city's rules. Need a layout as well as a sign? See our sign design services.

Visit the ShopSign permits near Sun Valley, by city
| City | Who reviews signs | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| City of Los AngelesSun Valley, North Hollywood, Van Nuys and most of the Valley | LADBS (building and electrical) and City Planning (zoning) | New, changed, removed and lit signs usually need a permit. A face change on an existing cabinet usually doesn't. Lit-sign permits are issued only to C-10 or C-45 licensed contractors. |
| Burbank | Planning Division first, then the Building Division | A sign permit is needed to put up, change or move a sign. Changing the copy of a permitted insert is exempt when nothing structural changes. |
| Glendale | Community Development, then Building & Safety | Multi-tenant sites often need an approved sign program, and the city's urban designer reviews signs. |
| Pasadena | Planning design review, then a building permit | Some signs go to design review by staff or the Design Commission. Six or more tenants usually means a Master Sign Plan. |
