Design & 3D mockup

Sign Design Services: a 3D Mockup on Your Own Storefront Photo

Our sign design services start with a phone photo of your building. We design the sign for that wall, then show it on your photo at the proposed size and color, before anything is cut, printed or lit.

Free for business-sign requests: 1 mockup + 1 round of changes per location. Extra rounds are billed. No payment details.

Sign design for the wall it goes on

A sign has to fit three things at once: your wall, the distance people read it from, and the rules your landlord and city set. That's why we design on a photo of your building instead of a blank page. You see the size, the colors and the lighting the way people on the street will.

We're a sign design company inside a working sign shop. The people who draw your sign can walk over to the printers, the router and the laser in our Sun Valley shop and check that it builds the way it's drawn. Custom sign design in Los Angeles, from storefront letters to lobby walls, starts the same way: one photo.

Mockup first

Your photo in, your sign on it

Send a straight-on phone photo of the wall. We place your sign on it at a proposed size, color and lighting, so you, your partners and your landlord can judge it before anything is built.

Lit sign? Add a night photo and we show it after dark too.

How the design step works

Five steps from a phone photo to a quote you can act on. You can stop after the mockup. There's no obligation to order.
  1. Send a photo

A straight-on photo of the wall, the address and your logo if you have it. Text it to the shop or start with the form.

    Who You

  2. Get your mockup

We size the sign to your wall and reading distance, pick materials and lighting, and place it on your photo.

    Who Our Sun Valley shop

  3. One round of changes

Change the letter size, colors or layout and we update the mockup. This round is free. Extra rounds are billed.

    Who You and our designer

  4. Drawings

The approved mockup becomes a dimensioned drawing for your landlord, then the sign drawings the city reviews.

    Who Our shop

  5. Your quote

A quote for the sign as drawn. Installation and permit filing are done by our licensed sign-contractor partner. Your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number.

How a sign project works

How to take a good storefront photo

One good phone photo does most of the work. These six habits make the mockup more accurate.

  • Straight on. Stand across the street, face the wall squarely and fit the whole storefront in the frame.
  • A door in the frame. A door or window gives us the scale, so the mockup shows the sign at its real size.
  • The mounting area, close up. The fascia, wall or old sign where the new one goes, so we can see the surface.
  • A night photo for lit signs. It shows the streetlights and the other signs yours will compete with.
  • No glare. Don't shoot into the sun. An overcast day or open shade works best.
  • Rough measurements, if you can. The width of the storefront and the height of the sign area. Not required.

What we design around

A sign that looks right on a screen can still be too small from the street, or too big for your lease. We check these before you see a mockup.
  • Reading distance

Letter height and stroke weight are set by how far away people read the sign: from a car across the boulevard or from the sidewalk.
  • Allowed sign area

In most City of LA commercial zones, a tenant gets about 3 sq ft of wall sign per foot of storefront. Channel letters can get 20% more on an unchanged wall color. Sign districts and specific plans can be stricter.
    Los Angeles sign permits
  • Landlord criteria

Shopping centers and office buildings set letter heights, colors, lighting and mounting. Send the criteria PDF and we design inside it.
  • Day and night

Translucent colors look different lit and unlit. A night photo helps us judge the glow, and we confirm colors with you before fabrication.

Designed where it's built

Designs we know how to build

Every design is checked against how it will be made: the letter depth, how the face is lit, where the wiring runs and how it mounts to your wall. Strokes too thin to cut or a face too large for one sheet get fixed on screen, not on install day.

Bring your own designer's files if you have them. We check them for production and show them on your photo the same way.

Design cost

What's free, and what isn't

For business-sign requests, the first mockup and one round of changes are free, per location. Extra rounds of changes are billed. If anything else in the design step costs money, we tell you the price before we start. There's no obligation to order.

Once you approve the mockup, the dimensioned drawing for your landlord is included with your quote.

Sign design questions

Still deciding? Call (818) 806-9006 or text a photo and ask.

Is the mockup really free?
Yes, for business-sign requests: one mockup and one round of changes per location. Extra rounds of changes are billed, and we tell you the price before we start. There's no obligation to order.
What is a 3D sign mockup?
Your new sign drawn onto a photo of your own building, with its depth, mounting and lighting, at the proposed size. It shows how the sign will look from the street, not just how the logo looks on a white page.
I don't have a logo file. Can you still help?
Yes. Send whatever you have: a photo, a business card or a screenshot. We rebuild the logo as clean vector artwork for fabrication instead of stretching a blurry image.
Can you design to my landlord's sign criteria?
Yes. Send the criteria with your photo. We design within its letter heights, colors, mounting and lighting rules, and prepare a dimensioned drawing for the landlord once you approve the mockup.
Can I use my own designer's artwork?
Yes. Send vector files (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG). We check them for production, tell you if anything won't build as drawn, and show the sign on your photo.
How long does a mockup take?
It depends on the sign and how many requests are ahead of yours. When we reply to your request, we tell you when to expect it.
Do you design signs outside the City of Los Angeles?
Yes. Design starts from your photo wherever the building is. The address tells us which city reviews the sign, and Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena each have their own rules, so we design to the right ones.
Can I see materials before I approve the design?
Yes. Letter and material samples are at our shop, 8511 Lankershim Blvd, Sun Valley, open daily from 7 AM to 10 PM. Call (818) 806-9006 before you come so the right person is free.

Good to send with it

  1. Your logo in any form, even a photo of a business card.
  2. Your landlord's sign criteria, if there are any.
  3. Your designer's files, if you have them.

None of these are required. One photo of the wall is enough to start.
