What is a monument sign?
A monument sign sits on the ground, or with its bottom edge no more than 12 inches above grade, and is at least as wide as it is tall. That's the definition in the LADBS Sign Manual for the City of Los Angeles, and it's what separates a monument from a pylon or pole sign. It marks the property at the eye level of drivers turning in and people walking up.
Monument signs for business work best on properties set back from the street, where the building alone doesn't show drivers where to turn. A multi-tenant monument lists several businesses on panels that change when the tenants do.
Mockup first
See the monument on your property first
Monument sign design starts with the spot itself: the driveway, the setback and what drivers see as they turn in. The mockup settles size, names, colors and lighting before anything is built. The first mockup and one round of changes are free for business-sign requests, per location. Extra rounds are billed.

How monument signs are built
-
Footing and frame
A steel or aluminum frame anchored to a concrete footing. For freestanding signs, LADBS asks for structural plans stamped by a licensed engineer or architect, with foundation details. -
Base and cladding
Aluminum skin, stucco, stone veneer or a masonry look over the frame, finished to match the building. The base often carries the street number. -
Faces and copy
Routed aluminum faces with push-through acrylic letters, dimensional letters mounted on the face, or printed tenant panels in a cabinet. -
Lighting
LED modules inside the cabinet light the faces or the push-through letters. A non-lit monument skips the power run; some are lit from the ground instead.
Where monument signs fit
-
Office buildings
A clean aluminum monument sign at the driveway with the building name and street number. On a multi-tenant building it can list the main tenants as well. -
Medical and dental buildings
Patients look for the entrance. A monument with the practice names and suite numbers, lit for evening hours, takes the guessing out. -
Apartment communities
Apartment monument signs carry the community name and address, often with the leasing number, on a base that fits the landscaping. -
Churches and schools
Church monument signs carry the name and the service times. A printed panel for the times can be swapped without touching the rest of the sign. -
Shopping centers and plazas
A multi-tenant monument at each entrance, with a panel for each tenant. In the City of LA, a pole sign at a mini-shopping center needs a conditional use permit first. -
Auto businesses
A pole sign for an automotive use needs a conditional use permit in the City of LA too, so a monument is often the simpler path.

What monument signs usually cost
Six things move the price of a monument sign most. The footing, trenching for power and landscaping repair are often quoted separately, so compare quotes line by line.
-
Size and sides
Face area, height, and whether the sign is single- or double-sided. -
Base and finish
Stone veneer and masonry usually cost more than painted aluminum. -
Lighting
Lit cabinets and push-through letters need LED modules, a power supply and a power run to the sign. -
Tenant panels
More names means more panels and more faces to make. -
Site work
The footing, trenching, removing an old sign and repairing the landscaping. -
Engineering and permits
Stamped structural plans and city fees, which depend on the city and the sign.
For scale, HomeAdvisor's national reference is $5,000 to $20,000 (HomeAdvisor, 2026). That's not our price. Send a photo for a real number.
LA permit note
Monument signs and Los Angeles permits
In the City of Los Angeles a new monument sign needs a building permit and a sign pre-inspection. LADBS asks for a plot plan, elevations, and structural plans stamped by a licensed engineer or architect, with foundation details. Permits for lit signs go only to a C-10 or C-45 licensed contractor.
Our licensed sign-contractor partner files the permit, and we prepare the drawings. Your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number.
Check the zone first. C1, C1.5 and CR zones allow only signs attached to a building, so no monument at all. Look up the parcel on ZIMAS, or send us the address.
