Mockup first
See your sign on your storefront before we build it
Take a straight-on phone photo of your storefront from across the street. We place your sign on it at a proposed size, color and lighting, so you can judge it, and show it to your landlord, before anything is cut.
Good retail sign design in Los Angeles has two audiences: your customers and your landlord. A mockup on your own building answers both. The first mockup and one round of changes are free for business-sign requests, per location. Extra rounds are billed.
A phone photo is enough. No payment details.

Signs by type of shop
-
Barbershops
A barber shop sign usually pairs front-lit letters or a lightbox on the fascia with a two-sided blade sign people see from the sidewalk, where the frontage allows. Services and hours go on the glass in cut vinyl. -
Coffee shops
A coffee shop sign is often halo-lit or dimensional letters over the door, plus a lightbox or, where the frontage allows, a small blade sign for foot traffic. The menu and hours go on the window. -
Smoke shops
A smoke shop sign has to read at night, so most start with front-lit channel letters or a lightbox. In the City of LA, window signs can cover up to 10% of the window area. -
Tattoo studios
LED neon in the window, or halo-lit letters for a darker, quieter look. Frosted film keeps the chairs out of view from the street while the name stays visible. -
Flower shops
A flower shop sign tends to be softer: painted dimensional letters, a blade sign with a simple mark if the building allows one, and window graphics you change with the seasons. -
Gift shops and boutiques
Dimensional letters or a slim lightbox over the door, and window graphics that change for each sale without touching the main sign. -
Ice cream and dessert shops
Bright colors and a sign that reads from across the street: front-lit letters or LED neon, with the menu on the glass for people walking by. -
Pop-up shops
Short leases need signs that come down cleanly: printed panels, window vinyl and a banner. In the City of LA, temporary signs and banners need a permit too, and can stay up 30 days at a time, 90 days a year at most. -
Pawn shops
Large front-lit letters or a lightbox that read from a moving car. With a lightbox, a new face can go into the same cabinet later without a new permit in the City of LA.

Three questions that pick most storefront signs
-
Are you open after dark?
If people find you at night, a lit sign earns its cost: channel letters, a lightbox or LED neon. If you close at six, non-lit dimensional letters can look just as sharp by day. -
Does your landlord have sign criteria?
Most shopping centers do. The criteria often fix the sign type, letter height, colors and lighting, and the landlord signs off before the city. Send them with your photo. -
Who needs to see it?
Drivers need large letters on the fascia. People on the sidewalk see the windows first, or a blade sign where the frontage allows one. Many commercial storefront signs are one of each.
What a storefront sign usually costs
Lit channel letters on a single storefront usually run in the thousands of dollars. HomeAdvisor's national reference for installed channel letters is $4,000 to $20,000 (HomeAdvisor, 2026). That's a national reference, not our price.
Non-lit letters, a lightbox or window graphics usually cost less than lit letters of the same size. Send a photo for a real number for your building.

LA permit notes
Storefront signs and Los Angeles permits
Your landlord approves the design first, then the city. In the City of Los Angeles, a new, changed, removed or lit sign usually needs a permit. A new face on an existing cabinet usually doesn't.
How big can it be? In most commercial zones a tenant can have about 3 sq ft of wall sign per linear foot of storefront. Channel letters get 20% more when the wall color behind them stays the same. Window signs can cover up to 10% of the window area. A blade (projecting) sign needs at least 8 ft of clearance over the sidewalk, and the lot usually needs at least 50 ft of street frontage. Sign districts, specific plans and your lease can be stricter.
Permits for lit signs go only to a C-10 or C-45 licensed contractor. Our licensed sign-contractor partner files the permit, and we prepare the drawings. Your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number.
Send the address. We'll tell you which city reviews your sign and what it usually asks for.
Read the Los Angeles sign permit guideCity of Los Angeles: when a sign needs a permit
Usually needs a permit
- A new sign
- Changes to an existing sign
- Lit (illuminated) signs The permit is issued to a C-10 or C-45 licensed contractor.
- Removing a sign
- Temporary signs, pennants and banners
Usually doesn't
- A new face or copy on an existing cabinet, with the cabinet left in place
- Small unlit ground signs: 20 sq ft or less and under 6' 6"
From the LADBS Sign Manual, P/BC 2023-078. Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena have their own rules. Information, not an approval.
