Sign installation by sign type

Exterior sign installation in Los Angeles usually starts with a site check and a permit. Every install is planned from the approved drawings. Here's what each kind of commercial sign installation involves.
  • Channel letters and wall signs

For channel letter sign installation in Los Angeles, letters go on a raceway or straight to the wall, placed from a full-size paper pattern that marks every stud and wire hole. In an LED sign installation, the letters connect to a circuit at the sign location.

  • Lightbox and blade signs

Cabinets mount flat to the wall. Blade signs hang from a bracket; in the City of LA they need at least 8 ft of clearance above the sidewalk.

  • Pylon and monument signs

Freestanding signs sit on footings. Poles, footings and any structural calcs are planned with the installer and, where required, a California engineer. Tenant panels can often be swapped with no new structure.

  • Lobby and interior signs

Standoff plaques, dimensional letters and logo walls, mounted level on drywall, glass, tile or wood paneling with anchors suited to the surface.
    Lobby signs
  • Parking and property signs

Aluminum panels on posts set in concrete or on base plates, plus wall- and fence-mounted directional, address and no-parking signs.

  • Old sign removal

The old sign comes down, the wall is checked, and holes are patched where the new sign doesn't cover them. In the City of LA, removing a sign needs a permit too.

How sign installation works

Sign installation services come down to five steps, and each one names who does it. Permit and inspection dates are set by the city, so we don't promise them.
  1. Site check

Measurements, wall construction, access and the power location are confirmed before install day, from your photos or a visit.

Who Our shop and the installer

  2. Approvals

Your landlord signs off on the drawing. Our licensed partner files the permit and the city issues it.

    Who Landlord, city, licensed partner

  3. Build

We build the sign in Sun Valley to the approved drawings, with a full-size mounting pattern for the wall.

    Who Our shop

  4. Install day

The old sign comes down if there is one. The new sign is mounted, wall penetrations are sealed, and lit signs are connected to the circuit at the sign location.

    Who Licensed partner

  5. Inspection and walk-through

Where the permit calls for an inspection, it follows the install. You check level, alignment and lighting before the crew leaves.

  • Removing the old sign
  • Patching and painting the wall where the old sign was
  • Power to the sign location (a junction box), and who runs it
  • City permit fees
  • Structural calculations or engineering, if the sign needs them
  • A lift or crane for high or heavy signs
  • After-hours install, if your landlord or business needs it
  • Resubmittals, if the city asks for corrections

No power near the sign location? Lit signs need a circuit there. The quote says what your electrician needs to prepare.

Old sign removal and wall repair

Replacing a sign usually means taking one down first. In the City of Los Angeles, removing an existing sign needs a permit, so the removal is planned into the same project as the new sign. Old raceways, brackets and wiring come off with it, and the holes are patched where the new sign won't cover them.

Keeping the cabinet? A new face or new copy in an existing cabinet usually needs no permit in the City of LA. If the cabinet comes off, the replacement counts as a new sign and has to meet today's code.

Signs made elsewhere

Installing a sign made elsewhere?

Bought a sign online, or moving one from an old location? Send photos of the sign, its label and the wall. We tell you what installing it involves, including the permit and power. Lit signs generally must be listed under the National Electrical Code (NEC 600.3), so a photo of the label helps.

Already have a cabinet you like? We can make new faces for it. In the City of LA, a face change alone usually needs no permit.

Parking lot signs

Parking lot sign installation

We make aluminum parking and property signs in our shop: directional arrows, reserved spaces, no-parking, entrance and address signs. They're installed on posts set in concrete, on base plates bolted to a slab, or on walls and fences.

For a whole lot, send a site plan or a few photos with the spots marked. The quote lists each sign and how it mounts.

LA permit note

Most installed signs in Los Angeles need a permit first

In the City of LA, a new sign, a changed sign, a lit sign and removing a sign usually need a permit before the work starts. For lit signs, LADBS issues the permit only to a C-10 or C-45 licensed contractor. Our licensed sign-contractor partner files it, and we prepare the drawings.

LADBS says a Sign Pre-Inspection normally takes at least two weeks, and plan-check assignment 15 to 30 business days. Read our Los Angeles sign permit guide or the LADBS Sign Manual. General information, not an approval.

Where we work

Our shop is in Sun Valley, in the City of Los Angeles, next to Burbank and a short drive from North Hollywood and Glendale. Send the address with your request. The quote says whether the installer covers it and which city reviews the sign.

Outside the City of LA, the permit path changes: Burbank usually sends sign applications to Planning first, Glendale often uses sign programs for multi-tenant buildings, and Pasadena may add design review, depending on the sign.

Sign installation questions

Still deciding? Call (818) 806-9006 or text a photo and ask.

Who installs the sign?
A licensed sign-contractor partner. We build the sign, prepare the drawings and coordinate the install. Your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number, and you can look it up on the CSLB website.
Can you help install a sign made elsewhere?
Yes. Send photos of the sign, its label and the wall, and we tell you what installing it involves, including the permit and power. Installation is done by our licensed sign-contractor partner.
What if there's no power at the sign location?
Lit signs need a circuit at the sign location. If there isn't one, your quote says exactly what your electrician needs to prepare and where.
Does my sign need a permit before it goes up?
In the City of LA, usually yes: new, changed, lit and removed signs need a permit. A face change on an existing cabinet usually doesn't. Our licensed partner files the permit, and we prepare the drawings.
Can you take down my old sign?
Yes, as part of the same project. In the City of LA, removing a sign needs a permit too. Your quote says whether patching and painting the wall is included.
Do I need to be there during installation?
Not the whole time. Someone should be there at the start to give access and at the end to look over the finished sign with the installer.
What moves the cost of sign installation?
Height and access (ladder, lift or crane), the wall or ground the sign mounts to, power at the sign, removal of an old sign and the permit. Send photos for a real number for your building.
Does the installer work in Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena?
Send the address, and the quote says whether the installer covers it. Each of those cities reviews signs its own way, and we prepare the drawings for the right one.
