Channel letter sign cost: How Much Do Channel Letter Signs Cost in Los Angeles?

Channel letter sign cost comes down to the letters and the wall they go on: how tall, how many, how they light and how they mount. As a national reference, HomeAdvisor puts installed channel letter signs at $4,000 to $20,000. That's a national figure, not our price. This guide covers what moves the number in Los Angeles and what a quote can leave out.

What the national numbers say

HomeAdvisor's commercial sign cost guide, updated June 20, 2026, lists channel letter signs at $4,000 to $20,000, depending on size and lighting options. It says those prices include professional installation, which this kind of sign needs because it's heavy and complex. It also says reverse channel letters, the halo-lit kind, can cost up to 30% more than standard ones, and that channel letters cost more than most non-electric signs because they take more materials and more work to build.

The same guide lists two services you may need to budget for on top of the sign: electrical wiring at $560 to $2,300, and a building permit at $400 to $2,500. HomeAdvisor says it builds its ranges from surveys of customers after their projects are finished, plus outside research. These are national figures, not Los Angeles prices and not our prices. Use them to sanity-check a quote, not to budget to the dollar.

What moves the price of channel letters

Six things set channel letters pricing. HomeAdvisor names two of them: size and lighting. The other four come from your design and your building.
  • Letter height and count

Every letter is its own can: returns, face, back, LED modules and a power feed. Taller letters need more of each, and every added letter is one more piece to build, wire and hang. A long business name usually costs more than a short one at the same height.
  • How the letters light

Front-lit letters are the usual baseline. Halo-lit letters have metal faces and stand off the wall. Front-and-back-lit letters carry two LED layouts. Non-lit letters drop the LEDs and the electrical work.
  • Faces, colors and finish

Stock acrylic and return colors are the simplest. An exact brand color in translucent vinyl, day/night vinyl, painted returns and trim cap, or brushed and mirror metal faces each add material and hours.
  • Fonts and logos

Thin strokes, script fonts and small openings inside letters take more cutting and LED work, and some need a backer panel. A logo is often built as its own lit piece or shaped cabinet next to the letters.
  • Raceway or direct mount

A raceway is a slim box that carries the wiring. It adds a piece of metal but needs fewer holes in the wall. Direct mount shows only the letters, but each letter needs its own holes and wire path through the wall, and the power supplies need a spot behind it.
  • The wall, the height and the power

Stucco, brick, metal panel and glass each mount differently. A sign high on a building may need a lift. If there's no circuit near the sign location, an electrician adds one. Taking down an old sign and patching the wall is extra work too.

Compare in person

See a mirror face and a brushed one side by side

Mirror and brushed finishes are common choices for the solid faces of halo-lit and non-lit letters. On a screen they look alike. In hand, under daylight and next to your wall color, they don't.

Both samples are at Angels Print, 8511 Lankershim Blvd in Sun Valley, open daily 7 AM to 10 PM. Pick the one you want, and the quote is for that finish.

Front-lit, halo-lit or unlit: where the money goes

Same name, same height, three ways to build it. The lighting choice changes the parts list, the electrical work and the permit path.

What a channel letter quote can leave out

Two quotes for the same letters can look far apart when one covers more of the job. These are the lines to look for on a channel letter quote.

What a complete quote includes
Installation
HomeAdvisor's channel letter range includes it. Some quotes price the letters alone. Ask who hangs them and under which CSLB license.
A circuit at the sign
Lit letters need power where they hang. If there's no circuit there, an electrician adds one. HomeAdvisor's national reference for electrical wiring is $560 to $2,300.
Raceway finish or wall access
A raceway painted to match your wall, or, for direct mount, a way to reach the back of the wall for the wire runs and power supplies.
Permit drawings and city fees
New lit letters need a sign permit in the City of LA. HomeAdvisor's national reference for a building permit is $400 to $2,500. Ask whether the drawings and the fee are in the number.
Structural engineering
In the City of LA, a wall sign under 100 sq ft skips stamped plans and calculations, unless the building is unreinforced masonry. A larger sign needs them.
The old sign
Taking it down, patching the holes and painting the wall where it hung. In the City of LA, removing a sign needs a permit too, though the removal and the new wall sign on the same building can share one application.
Lift time
A lift or boom truck for letters high on the building, and after-hours work if your shopping center requires it.
Design rounds
Drawings for your landlord and any extra design rounds. With us, the first mockup and one round of changes are free per location for business-sign requests; extra rounds are billed.

Los Angeles

How LA rules shape the size, the timing and the cost

In the City of Los Angeles, a new channel letter sign needs a sign permit. LADBS issues permits for illuminated signs only to a licensed C-10 electrical contractor or C-45 electrical sign contractor, so a quote for lit letters should say who files. With us, a licensed sign-contractor partner files and installs, and we prepare the drawings. Your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number.

The code caps how much letter you can buy. Instead of counting every sign on the lot, LADBS lets a tenant's wall signs total up to 3 sq ft per foot of the tenant's exterior frontage. On a 20 ft storefront, that's 60 sq ft for all your wall signs together. Separately, the wall-sign rules allow channel letters 20% more area, as long as the background color stays the same.

Waiting costs money too if you're paying rent before you open. LADBS says a Sign Pre-Inspection normally takes at least two weeks. If plans go to regular plan check, assigning them to an engineer normally takes 15 to 30 business days, or 6 to 10 days expedited, and LADBS notes those estimates change week to week.

Information, not an approval. Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena have their own rules. Sources: the LADBS Sign Manual (P/BC 2023-078) and LADBS answers on pre-inspection and plan check.

How to get a real number for your building

A price for channel letters starts with the wall. This is how a photo becomes a quote.
  1. Send a photo and the address

A straight-on photo of the wall from across the street, plus the address, so we know which city reviews the sign.

    Who You

  2. We size the letters

We check what your city's code and your landlord's criteria usually allow, then size the letters to fit, so you aren't quoted for more sign than the wall can take.

    Who Our shop

  3. See them on your storefront

Your mockup shows the letters on your own building. Want to compare front-lit with halo-lit, or raceway with direct mount? Use your round of changes for the second look.

    Who Our shop

  4. Get the quote

A number for your letters, your wall and your city. Installation and permit filing are done by a licensed sign-contractor partner, and your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number.

Channel letter cost questions

Still deciding? Call (818) 806-9006 or text a photo and ask.

How much do channel letter signs cost?
HomeAdvisor's national reference is $4,000 to $20,000 for installed channel letter signs, depending on size and lighting (updated June 2026). That's a national figure, not our price. Your number depends on letter height and count, the lighting, the mounting and your wall.
Why do halo-lit (reverse) channel letters cost more?
Their faces are solid metal, finished on every side people see, and each letter stands off the wall so the light can spread behind it. HomeAdvisor says reverse channel letters can cost up to 30% more than standard ones. See halo-lit channel letters.
Is installation included in channel letter pricing?
In HomeAdvisor's range, yes: it includes professional installation. Shop quotes vary, so ask whether installation, the permit, electrical work and removing the old sign are in the number. With us, installation and permit filing are done by a licensed sign-contractor partner, and your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number.
Does HomeAdvisor's range include wiring and the permit?
Its channel letter range includes installation. Electrical wiring ($560 to $2,300) and a building permit ($400 to $2,500) are listed separately, as services you may need on top. All three are national references, not our prices.
How much does a sign permit add in Los Angeles?
HomeAdvisor's national reference for a building permit is $400 to $2,500. That's not an LA figure and not our price. In the City of LA, the permit for a lit sign is issued only to a C-10 or C-45 licensed contractor, and LADBS says a Sign Pre-Inspection alone normally takes at least two weeks. Information, not an approval.
Can I get a price per letter?
A per-letter number hides most of the job. Letter count is one of six price drivers: height, lighting, faces, mounting and your wall move the total too, and power at the sign, the permit and installation sit on top. We price the whole sign from a photo of your wall and the address.
How can I keep the cost of channel letters down?
Size the letters to what your city and landlord allow, not bigger. Pick front-lit over halo-lit if the look works for you. Tell us if there's already power near the sign location. And compare two versions in your mockup: the first mockup and one round of changes are free per location for business-sign requests; extra rounds are billed.

What helps us price it

  1. A straight-on photo of the wall, from across the street.
  2. The width of your storefront, if you know it.
