What is an acrylic sign?

Acrylic is a rigid, glass-clear plastic, often called plexiglass. An acrylic sign is a panel or a set of letters cut from it, with the graphic printed on the front, printed on the back, or cut from a second layer and bonded on. Most panels hang on metal standoffs, so they float off the wall and the edge catches the light.

That clean, glass-like look is why acrylic signs for business sit behind reception desks, beside suite doors and on counters all over Los Angeles. Acrylic weighs about half as much as glass the same size and is far harder to shatter, so it's easier to hang and safer in a busy lobby. It does scratch more easily than glass, which is one reason many acrylic wall signs are printed on the back.

Mockup first

See the acrylic sign on your wall before it's cut

Clear acrylic takes on the color of the wall behind it, so a sign that looks right on a white screen can fade into a beige wall. The mockup shows it on yours. The first mockup and one round of changes are free for business-sign requests, per location. Extra rounds are billed.

Offices and clinics

Acrylic office signs that match from lobby to door

Acrylic is the usual material for a matching office set: the logo panel in reception, suite numbers, door plaques and hallway arrows. Cut from the same sheets and printed on the same printer, the pieces stay one color and one style from the front desk to the last room.

Frosted panels hide fingerprints on doors people touch all day. In medical and dental offices, acrylic wipes clean with mild soap and water; skip ammonia glass cleaners, which can cloud it over time. Room signs that name a permanent space have their own accessibility rules, covered on our office signs page.

How we make custom acrylic signs

Laser cutting and UV printing happen in our shop, so the print and the cut come from the same file and line up.
  • Cut the shape

A rectangle, rounded corners or the outline of your logo, cut on our laser. On most acrylic the laser leaves a clear, glossy edge, and it handles detail too fine for a router bit. Large or thick sheets can go on the CNC router.
  • Print the graphic

Your logo and text are UV-printed straight onto the acrylic in full color. On a clear panel, a layer of white ink goes behind the color so the logo reads solid, not see-through.
  • Add depth

For a raised logo, letters are laser-cut from a second sheet, often a color or mirror acrylic, and bonded onto the panel. The small shadow they cast is what makes acrylic logo signs read from the door.
  • Holes for mounting

Standoff holes go into the same cut file as the outline, so they land exactly where the drawing puts them. Small panels on smooth surfaces can mount flat with sign-mounting tape instead.
Where the color sits changes how an acrylic sign looks up close and how it holds up. Your mockup shows the build we suggest for your wall.

LA permit note

When an acrylic sign needs a city permit

In the City of Los Angeles, a new sign on an outside wall needs a permit, and so does altering or removing one. A face change, new copy on an existing sign, doesn't.

Indoors, two spots still count. An acrylic sign within 6 ft of a window or door and visible from outside is a window sign, and all window signs together may cover no more than 10% of that window. A sign inside a covered mall needs a permit, with its edges and back fully encased in metal. Outside, a wall sign over 40 sq ft must be metal or another approved noncombustible material; approved plastic is still allowed for its letters and display surface.

Our licensed sign-contractor partner files the permit, and we prepare the drawings. Your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number. Information, not an approval. Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena have their own rules. Source: LADBS Sign Manual, P/BC 2023-078. More in the Los Angeles sign permit guide.

Check My Address

In the City of LA, new, changed, removed and lit signs usually need a permit. A face change alone usually doesn't.

What moves the price of an acrylic sign

A 6-inch door plaque and a 10-foot layered logo wall are both acrylic business signs, so one published range would mislead more than it helps. We don't show a number here. These are the things that set it:

  • Size and thickness. Bigger and thicker panels use more sheet and more machine time.
  • The build. A face print takes fewer passes than a reverse print with a white layer behind it, and both take less work than layered letters.
  • Shape and detail. A rectangle cuts quickly. A logo outline with fine points and small counters takes longer.
  • Repeats. A run of identical plaques shares one setup across every piece. Ten one-off designs each need their own.
  • Mounting and the wall. Standoffs or tape, drywall, glass or tile, and whether installation has to happen after hours.

A photo of the wall and a rough size get you a real number.

Acrylic sign questions

Still deciding? Call (818) 806-9006 or text a photo and ask.

Acrylic or glass: which is better for a business sign?
For most business signs, acrylic. It looks very close to glass, weighs about half as much and is far harder to shatter, so it's easier to mount and safer in a lobby. A laser can cut it to the outline of your logo, which it can't do with glass. Glass does resist scratches better. Where people brush past an acrylic sign, a reverse print keeps the ink behind the sheet, out of reach.
What's the difference between face printing and reverse printing?
A face print sits on the front of the panel. A reverse (second-surface) print goes on the back of clear acrylic and is read through it, so the acrylic protects the ink and gives a glossy, behind-glass look. Reverse printing needs a white layer behind the color so the logo reads solid. See the comparison above.
Can acrylic signs go outside in Los Angeles?
Yes, with the right build. A sign in full sun is usually reverse-printed, so the sheet covers the ink, and hung on stainless or aluminum standoffs that won't rust. Acrylic grows and shrinks with heat more than metal does, so the mounting has to let a long panel move a little on a hot Valley afternoon. Your quote names the print side and the hardware. In the City of LA a new exterior sign needs a permit: see the permit note.
How are acrylic signs mounted?
Most hang on standoffs: short metal barrels that screw into the wall and hold the panel off it. On drywall they go into studs or anchors. Small panels on glass or smooth tile can be bonded with sign-mounting tape. Installation is done by our licensed sign-contractor partner. Your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number.
How thick should my acrylic sign be?
It depends on the size of the piece. Door plaques and small panels are commonly 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Larger wall panels on standoffs are often 3/8 or 1/2 inch, which shows a deeper edge and stays flat across a wider span. Your quote states the thickness of every piece, so two bids can be compared line by line.
Can I get acrylic letters without a panel behind them?
Yes. Letters cut from thick acrylic mount straight to the wall on studs and stand slightly off it. They're painted, left in a solid color or faced with mirror acrylic. See dimensional letters for the full range of non-lit 3D letters.
