Murals, wallpaper and wall panels

Wall Graphics and Murals in Los Angeles

Wall graphics turn a blank wall into a mural, a logo wall or a texture you can touch. We design and make them in our Sun Valley shop: printed wall vinyl, custom wallpaper, cut vinyl lettering, printed panels and raised UV panels. You see the design on a photo of your own wall first.

A straight-on photo of the wall is enough. Measurements help but are optional. The first mockup and one round of changes are free for business-sign requests, per location. Extra rounds are billed.

A printed wall mural about 15 feet wide: a carpet pattern down the left edge opening into vineyards, cypress trees, a stone church and snowy mountains, framed by grapevines and pomegranates
Our work: A 452 × 232 cm wall mural (about 14.8 × 7.6 ft), printed in Sun Valley. Yours starts as a mockup on a photo of your own wall.

What are wall graphics?

Wall graphics are large prints made for one wall: a corner-to-corner mural, a logo and values wall, a map, a photo or a textured panel. They're printed on wall vinyl, wallpaper or rigid panels, or cut from vinyl as lettering. Custom wall graphics change a room without construction, and removable films are made to come off when the lease ends.

Office wall graphics carry the brand past the reception desk. School wall graphics turn a corridor into a map or a mascot wall. Bigger jobs planned with the room are called environmental graphics: wall murals and lettering that tell people where they are and who works there.

A good fit for:

  • Office brand walls and conference rooms
  • Restaurant and cafe feature walls
  • School hallways, classrooms and gyms
  • Fitness studios and locker rooms
  • Clinic waiting rooms and hallways
  • Retail feature walls

Mockup first

See the graphic on your wall before it's printed

A wall graphic is hard to judge on a small proof. A mural that looks right on a laptop can crowd a doorway or lose a face behind a filing cabinet. So we place the design on a photo of your own wall, at the proposed size. The first mockup and one round of changes are free for business-sign requests, per location. Extra rounds are billed.

  1. Photograph the wall

Straight on, the whole wall, floor to ceiling. A tape-measure width helps, but a rough number is fine.

  2. We lay out the design

Your artwork or a design we build from your logo and photos, scaled to the wall and placed around doors, outlets and furniture.

Kinds of wall graphics

Six ways to put a graphic on a wall. Choose one and it travels with your request; you can still change it on the form. Many rooms mix two, such as a mural on one wall and cut lettering on the next.

Wall vinyl, wallpaper, panels or raised UV?

Four ways to cover the same wall. Three things decide it: the surface, how long the graphic stays up, and whether you want texture.

Not sure which fits? Send a photo of the wall and say how long the graphic should stay up. We'll suggest one.

Start with the wall

The wall decides the material more than the design does. Tell us what you have, or let the photo show it.
  • Fresh paint

Paint has to cure before vinyl goes on, or the vinyl can lift, or pull paint off when it comes down. Tell us when the wall was painted.
  • Smooth drywall

Takes wall vinyl, wallpaper or panels. The widest choice of materials and finishes.
  • Light texture

Orange-peel and knockdown walls need a softer, more conformable wall vinyl. Heavy texture shows through a print, so panels usually look better.
  • Brick, block and concrete

Vinyl struggles to follow mortar lines and rough block. Printed panels mounted on the wall give a flat, sharp image instead.
  • Glass

Partitions, doors and storefront glass take window film, not wall vinyl.
    Window graphics
  • Outside walls

Sun and weather call for materials made for outdoor use. In the City of LA, the rules also depend on what the graphic shows.

What moves the price of wall graphics

Wall graphics are priced wall by wall, and we don't publish prices. No national price reference we could cite covers printed commercial wall graphics, so this page shows no range. Your quote is built from these:

  • Area: the width and height of each wall, and how many walls are in the job.
  • Material: wall vinyl, wallpaper, cut lettering, printed panels or raised UV. Raised texture takes more ink and more passes through the printer.
  • Finish: matte or gloss laminate, and removable or long-term adhesive.
  • Artwork: a print-ready file from you, or a design we build from your logo and photos.
  • Wall prep: taking down old graphics, patching, or waiting for fresh paint to cure.
  • Access: stairwells, high ceilings, and after-hours installs that let an office keep working.

Outside walls in the City of LA: wall sign, mural or supergraphic

Inside, a graphic deep in the room is part of your interior. A sign or logo within 6 ft of a window or door and visible from outside counts as a window sign, and all window signs together may cover at most 10% of the window. On an outside wall, the City of Los Angeles sorts a graphic by what it shows and how big it is:

  • Your name, logo or products: a wall sign. It needs a sign permit and counts toward your sign area: without a full sign inventory of the lot, one tenant's wall signs are limited to 3 sq ft per foot of that space's outside frontage. Our licensed sign-contractor partner files the permit, and we prepare the drawings.
  • Art with no commercial message: it can be registered with the Department of Cultural Affairs as an Original Art Mural, with no business name, logo or product. A new printed mural also needs a building permit. Registration starts with a neighborhood meeting, and the property owner records a 2-year covenant to keep the mural up.
  • A vinyl or mesh wrap that breaks the wall-sign rules: a supergraphic sign, allowed only in specific cases, such as under a specific plan, and processed only by the LADBS Metro office.
  • Construction fence wraps: temporary signs on a construction wall, allowed only in commercial and industrial zones, after a sign pre-inspection and a $10,000 bond posted with LADBS.

Information, not an approval. Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena have their own rules. Sources: the LADBS Sign Manual (P/BC 2023-078) and the Department of Cultural Affairs mural FAQ. More in the Los Angeles sign permit guide.

  • A straight-on photo of each wall, with the floor and ceiling in the frame
  • Width and height of each wall, if you can measure (a rough number is fine)
  • The surface: smooth paint, texture, brick, block, wood or glass
  • When the wall was last painted
  • Your logo file, artwork or photos, or a few lines about the idea
  • How long it should stay up: an event, the lease or for good
  • The address, and the building's rules if you rent

Doors, outlets, light switches and thermostats in the photo help us lay the design around them.

Wall graphics questions

Still deciding? Call (818) 806-9006 or text a photo and ask.

Will wall vinyl damage my paint?
Removable wall vinyl on fully cured paint usually comes off cleanly. Fresh paint, or paint that never bonded well to the wall, can lift with it. That's why we ask when the wall was painted and choose the adhesive for how long the graphic stays up.
Can you print our own photos or artwork?
Yes, if the file holds up at wall size. A photo that looks sharp on a phone can turn soft when it's 10 ft wide. We check your files before we quote and tell you what will print sharply, or suggest vector artwork or a tighter crop.
What are 3D wall graphics?
Usually one of two things: printed panels mounted off the wall on standoffs, so they cast a shadow, or raised UV, where the ink is built up in layers and the print itself has texture. Our raised UV panels are the second kind. See the 9 × 9 ft panel above, or run your hand over a sample at the shop.
Do you do wall wraps and building wraps in Los Angeles?
We quote outside walls case by case: send a photo of the wall and the address. Outdoor graphics need materials made for sun and weather, and in the City of LA the rules depend on what the wrap shows. A name or logo makes it a wall sign, art with no commercial message can be registered as a mural, an oversized vinyl or mesh wrap is a supergraphic, and fence wraps on a construction site are temporary signs that need a bond. See the LA permit note. Information, not an approval.
Can we put wall graphics in a rented office?
Usually, with the landlord's OK. Most leases and building rules say what can go on the walls, so ask the building manager first and show them the mockup. Removable wall vinyl on cured paint comes off at move-out, and panels unscrew and leave a few holes to patch. Wallpaper is the hardest to take down.
Who installs wall graphics?
A licensed sign-contractor partner. Your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number. If the office has to keep working, ask for an evening or weekend install when you request the quote.
Can I see samples before I decide?
Yes. The shop is at 8511 Lankershim Blvd in Sun Valley, a short drive from North Hollywood, Burbank and Van Nuys, and it's open daily 7 AM to 10 PM. Bring a photo of the wall and compare raised UV and material samples against it. Call ahead so the right person is there.
