Signs along a patient's path
Patients often arrive anxious, a little late and unsure which building is yours. Good signs for a medical office answer one question at each step: is this the building, where do I park, which floor, which door, which room. Miss a step, and your front desk answers it on the phone all day.
We plan dental office signs and doctors office signs as one family, in one typeface and one set of colors, whether the practice is a one-story office on a Valley boulevard or a suite in a Los Angeles medical tower.
-
From the street
Letters on the building or a monument at the driveway, sized to read from a car. In a multi-tenant medical building, that may be your panel on the shared monument or pylon.Monument signs -
In the parking lot
Patient parking, drop-off and entrance arrows in printed aluminum. Accessible-space signs carry set wording, so your architect or property manager confirms the text.Parking and property signs -
In the building
A directory by the entrance or the elevators, then suite ranges with arrows on each floor. If the building already has a sign standard, the new pieces follow it.Wayfinding signage -
At your suite
Your practice name and suite number at the entry: a panel on the wall beside the door, or cut vinyl on a glass door.Office and suite signs -
At the front desk
Your logo on the wall behind reception, in non-lit letters, an acrylic panel or halo-lit letters. Patients look at it while they check in.Lobby signs -
Down the hall
Exam-room numbers, provider names, lab, X-ray and staff-only doors, plus frosted film on any glass that needs privacy.Acrylic plaques for exam rooms

Suite, door and exam-room signs
Door signs that survive staff changes
Inside a practice, signs change more often than you'd expect. Providers join and leave, a consult room becomes a second operatory, a suite gets renumbered. So split each door into two parts. What stays put, the room number or room name, goes on a fixed plaque. What changes, the provider's name, goes on a slide-in strip in a frame: a new hire means a new strip, not a new sign.
Pick a matte face over a glossy one. Overhead light panels bounce off gloss, and for directional and informational signs the ADA asks for a non-glare finish and lettering that contrasts with its background, light on dark or dark on light (2010 ADA Standards, 216.3 and 703.5.1). Plaques and name strips are cut and printed in our Sun Valley shop.
Exam-room numbers and restrooms are a different case: they need raised letters and Braille, which this page does not offer. See the Braille question below.

Make, permit, install
We prepare the drawings and cut and print the panels, non-lit letters and vinyl in Sun Valley. Our licensed sign-contractor partner files the city permit where one is needed and installs the signs. Your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number.Who Us and our licensed partner

Privacy on the glass, room by room
| Question | Front window and door | Exam and treatment rooms | Glass offices and consult rooms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Usual choice | Name, hours and suite number in cut vinyl, plus a frosted band at seated eye level | Frosted film over the whole pane | A frosted band with clear glass above it, or your logo cut out of the frost |
| What it does | People outside see who you are. Patients in the waiting room aren't on display. | No clear view in. Daylight still comes through. | Privacy for calls and charting, without closing the room in. |
| Evening hours | Pick frosted film, not perforated one-way film. Perforated film only hides the room while it's brighter outside, so after dark a lit waiting room shows through. | Frosted film still blurs the view after dark. A lit room can show soft shadows close to the glass. | The frosted band keeps blurring the view after dark, the same as in exam rooms. |
| Changing it later | New hours or a new provider list peel off and go back on without touching the rest. | Film peels off when you move out. Check what your lease says first. | A new logo means new film, not new glass. |
In the City of LA, lettering, logos and hours on the glass, or within 6 ft of it and visible from outside, are window signs, and all of them together may cover at most 10% of the window area (LADBS Sign Manual). Information, not an approval.
Opening or moving a practice? Plan the signs first
Work backward from the day the first patient walks in. The building sign is the slowest piece: the property manager approves it first, then the city reviews it. LADBS publishes its own timelines:
- A Sign Pre-Inspection normally takes a minimum of two weeks (LADBS).
- Regular plan check submittals normally take 15 to 30 business days to be assigned to a plan check engineer, and LADBS says that time changes from week to week (LADBS).
So start the building sign while the suite is still being drawn up, not when the build-out ends. Interior signs follow the construction: door plaques and lobby letters go up after paint and flooring, before the first patient.
Moving from another address? In the City of LA, taking the old sign down needs a permit too, so put its removal on the same request. Tell us your opening date, and we'll tell you plainly what can realistically be ready by then.
Building sign, suite and door signs, glass and a temporary banner in one request. Temporary banners need a city permit too. No payment details.

Made in Sun Valley
Pick finishes in person, not on a screen
Brushed metal, matte acrylic and gold mirror look different under exam-room lighting than they do on a monitor. Bring your logo colors to Angels Print, 8511 Lankershim Blvd in Sun Valley, and hold samples next to them. The acrylic and aluminum panels, non-lit letters and vinyl for a clinic set are cut and printed here, on our CNC router, laser and UV printers.
We're open daily, 7 AM to 10 PM, so you can stop by before or after patient hours. Call ahead so the right person is there.
LA permit notes
Medical office signs and Los Angeles permits
Clinic signs usually answer to two sets of rules: the building's sign standard and the city's code. In the City of Los Angeles, the city side is LADBS, and it issues permits for lit signs only to a C-10 or C-45 licensed contractor. When a permit is needed, our licensed sign-contractor partner files it, and we prepare the drawings. Your quote lists the installer's CSLB license number.
Two LADBS rules help a practice with many small signs. Information and directional signs on one lot can share one permit application and one Sign Pre-Inspection, and so can all the window signs on one building. Taking over a suite? Removing the last tenant's wall sign and installing yours on the same building can go on one application too. Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena review signs their own way.

Read the Los Angeles sign permit guideCity of Los Angeles: when a sign needs a permit
Usually needs a permit
- A new sign
- Changes to an existing sign
- Lit (illuminated) signs The permit is issued to a C-10 or C-45 licensed contractor.
- Removing a sign Including the old practice's sign when you move.
- Temporary signs and banners 30 days at a time, then 30 days down, 90 days a calendar year at most.
Usually doesn't
- A new face or tenant panel in an existing cabinet, with the cabinet left in place For example, your panel in the building's existing monument or pylon. If the cabinet comes out, a permit is needed.
- Small unlit ground signs: 20 sq ft or less, 6' 6" or less above the ground, at least 15 ft apart
From the LADBS Sign Manual, P/BC 2023-078. Specific plans and sign districts can add stricter rules, so we check them for your address before the drawings. Information, not an approval.
